AFIR: the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation
In order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the European Union is encouraging more sustainable modes of transport and especially the deployment of alternative fuel refuelling points in the EU.
The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR)adopted in the summer 2023, sets targets for the number of hydrogen filling stations.
With regard to hydrogen refueling points, the EU sets:
- at least 1 point every 200 km on major routes by 2030
- At least one point in every urban node
- Each point must provide 1 ton of 2/day at 700 bar.

HRS40: hydrogen stations delivering 1 ton of hydrogen per day
The HRS40 hydrogen refuelling station has a daily compression capacity of 1 ton of H2/day. It provides hydrogen at 700 barand 350 bar. It can refuel all types of vehicle, including heavy mobility vehicles.
Currently deployed across France, Spain, the UK and Germany, HRS stations will soon be rolled out in Italy and Portugal.
With 27 stations installed by the end of 2024, HRS hydrogen refueling solutions are tried and tested and offer an availability rate of over 95%.
4 HRS40 stations – AFIR compliant have been installed in 2024:
- Two of them in Hympulsion network : at Malataverne (26, France) and Lyon Saint-Exupery (69, France).
- One for Seven at Saint-Sulpice-la-Pointe (81, France).
- One at HRS' headquarters in Champagnier (38, France) on the testing area.
Compatible with all types of hydrogen mobility, they have the advantage of being scalable and of adaptable to all types of hydrogen sources : pipelines, tube trailers, carbon-free hydrogen produced on site by electrolysis, etc.
In line with the specifications of the AFIR regulation, HRS provides solutions in line with European policies for deploying low-carbon mobility.
